I’m very pleased that one of my clients recently landed a contract with a book publisher. I enjoyed helping her develop and distribute her book proposal. I’ll tell you right now…it was a lot of work.
Authors who just focus on writing a great book are going to miss the key to success—your book proposal needs to SELL YOU not just your book. In today’s competitive market publishers are looking for authors that have marketing savvy. They are looking for authors with some national visibility. So before you approach the publisher, you should establish yourself as an “expert” through speaking engagements, seminars, articles, media coverage and a strong Internet presence. Then you have to package you book proposal in a way that will showcase all this expertise!

I recently enjoyed a vacation to Northern California. My husband and I explored Napa and Sonoma Valleys for the first time. We had a great time… but what was interesting was my reaction when I came back home to the Rogue Valley (located in Southern Oregon). As I drove by the pear orchards and vineyards to my house I realized that it was just as beautiful as Napa AND a lot less expensive!
Sometimes you have to get away from something to really appreciate its value. I think that’s good advice if you’re an entrepreneur promoting a new service or product. Sometimes we’re just too close. If you can afford to hire a marketing expert—go for it. If they’re good it will be worth every penny.
If you can’t hire someone, find some friends or colleagues to give you a FRESH perspective. It should be someone who is successful at promoting themselves. Encourage them to be honest and listen to their perspective. It might reveal something you’ve never considered before. You can also take advantage of my free initial consultation. I’ve noticed a common thread with all the consultants, coaches, entrepreneurs and small business owners I work with… they all have marketing savvy. That’s why they’re still in business! However, the one thing they lack and consistently thank me for is a FRESH perspective. They know the ins-and-outs of their service and/or product—that’s the problem. They’re just too close. (This is especially true when it comes to writing a Bio or About Me page!)
- Are you sensing that your marketing is in a rut?
- Do you notice that your copy isn’t producing results?
- Are you procrastinating re-working your home page or sending out a sales letter?
These are signs that it’s time for some fresh perspective from a professional copywriter. A good copywriter starts by asking the right questions. These questions might be a revelation to you as they open up a whole new angle or approach to your marketing copy.
Not sure if it’s worth it? Contact me www.internetwritingpro.com/contact.html to take advantage of my free initial consultation. We can walk through the pros and cons of outsourcing and you’ll gain some fresh perspective – for free!

Every time you interact with vendors, colleagues and especially customers you’re marketing. It’s the little things – like email - that can make the biggest impressions. You’re probably generating a lot of email. A quick email to a customer or colleague may seem like a little thing but it’s all too easy to make the wrong impression. When it comes to representing your business, keep it professional. My recommendation would be to avoid text talk (LOL) and of course always spell check!Â
If you send your email without a signature line you’re missing a golden marketing opportunity. You might think, “But they already have my contact info. Why do I need to send it again?” Because they might forward your email or refer back to it later - by including your contact information you are making it that much easier for people to locate you. Another tip is to include a call to action following your signature line - visit my blog, sign-up for my newsletter, take a look at my new e-book.
