Interview with Jen

These are the questions I hear most frequently from new clients. If you’re interested in hiring me this is a great starting point. If I don’t answer one of your questions here feel free to contact me.

How do you work best with your clients?

I find copywriting to be a collaborative process. It starts by determining your objective. I can provide you with the best results when I know what you want to accomplish with your writing or marketing project. Sometimes that’s fairly straightforward and other times it requires discerning the big picture.

How do I provide you with the information you need?

Usually I get my information one of three ways:

Interview – We spend time together in person or on the phone. I’ll ask you questions and take lots of notes.

Research – You provide me with a general topic and I’ll research the subject on my own.

Outline or Rough Draft – You provide me with an outline of the information you’d like to cover. You can also send me your rough draft for editing.

Why would a writer hire a copywriter?

You might be surprised to learn that some of my clients are talented writers! One reason they turn to me is because they don’t have enough time. Writers often have another profession or business that keeps them busy. They can save time because I’m able to utilize the content they’ve already written in a new format. For example, I’ve taken content from a book my client wrote and have used it to create e-books, articles and newsletters.

Another reason a writer will hire a copywriter is to avail themselves of a copywriter’s marketing expertise. I can help you effectively utilize content to drive traffic to a website, promote sales and generate publicity.

What is SEO copywriting?

In the good old days it was easy to work with search engines. You came up with a list of keywords you thought your target audience would use in searches and handed them over to your web designer. It’s not that simple anymore. Now it’s all about SEO or search engine optimization. If you want search engines to actually pay attention to your keywords they must be included in your content.

The first step is to identify keywords that your target market is using. It’s always better to get specific with your keywords—a broad category will be too competitive. If search engine placement is absolutely critical to your marketing strategy consider hiring an SEO expert. I can provide you with a referral.

The second step is to make sure you utilize your keywords within the content of your site that is at the same time appealing and interesting to read. This is challenging but fun—for me anyway. You also need to keep your website content fresh and updated regularly or search engines will start ignoring your site.
